PS3 Hacks and Homebrew
The Trials and Triumphs of Playstation 3: Accepting Defeat on the PS3 Homebrew Scene?
The crafty technology behind the Playstation 3 has made Sony’s seventh generation console an exceptionally difficult puzzle to crack for gamers and programmers interested in running homegrown applications through the device. Although the PS3’s price has reduced significantly since its release in late 2006, new games typically start at $60, driving hardcore gamers to search for other means of utilizing the system’s many facets.
Installing PS3 Homebrew
Unlike the PS2 and the handheld Playstation Portable, the advanced hardware of the PS3 has eluded hackers’ attempts to install functional PS3 homebrew or develop modchips and emulators that can facilitate access to high-quality freeware games. While claims made by a well-known hacker indicated that exploits exist on the PS3, Sony’s triumph at blocking unauthorized access to the system OS and graphics card means that even a successful hacking will result in PS3 homebrew that can support little more than a game of Pong.
- Linux OS
As a concession, Sony designed the PS3 with the option to run versions of the Linux OS, giving their product the potential to perform more complex computer functions. Suppliers such as TerraSoft are already selling the console with Linux pre-installed, but if you’d rather install Linux on your own, you’ll most likely have to upgrade your hard drive for more space and back up any saved data.
To install Linux, begin by reformatting the PS3 hard drive from the System Settings menu. The reformatting process is completed by choosing a custom partition and the Quick Format option. You must also create a bootable disc with the necessary Linux ISO files, which can be downloaded online. Perform the installation by inserting the disk and choosing “Install Other OS” in the System Settings menu. The next time you boot the PS3, you will need to switch to using the other OS through the same menu, set your TV screen resolution, and choose your specific configuration settings.
- Megabox Media Center
For users more concerned with combining their PS3 media under one user-friendly interface, a free PS3 homebrew installer is available in the form of Megabox Media Center. In development since early 2008, Megabox executes via an external medium (USB drive or DVD) and is designed to simplify tasks such as ripping discs and streaming television to the PS3. While Megabox is intended to be more manageable for the average user than Linux, its beta technology is also likely to be plagued with bugs.
